11 Packing mistakes to avoid that can ruin your trip to Disney world

Getting ready to go to Disney World is super exciting! And packing can be one of the most exciting yet rushed tasks for planning your trip.

If you do not pack early and rush, things often get missed and ultimately can ruin your trip at Disney World.

In this article I’m going to share with you some packing mistakes that many of us make and how to avoid them.

Not bringing your kids favorite snacks

Imagine this….. You’re standing in line for the star wars ride and you hear two words. “ I’m Hungry”  then your kiddo starts having a tantrum, jumping up and down and yelling.

When you first have kids you quickly learn that a hungry kiddo is a cranky kiddo. When kids are cranky and start acting out it can literally ruin your trip at Disney World.

One mistake that us parents can make is not bringing our kids favorite snacks, even I have done this.

You may be thinking that you can just purchase something at the parks and yes you can, but what if you are in line for a ride or the line for the quick service is extremely long. Plus, we like to save money around here!

Having those snacks on hand can literally make or break your trip.  It does not have to be a ton of snacks, just a few.

Here are a few yummy snacks to bring:

  • Apple sauce
  • Bananas ( just don’t leave them in your bag too long )
  • Veggie chips
  • Fruit snacks
  • Crackers
  • Fruit ( if you have a container that keeps foods cold)

Putting outfits together for each day

I used to just pack a few of my favorite shirts, 4 dresses, random pants and just throw them in the bag. Then I would make it to my destination and it would take almost an hour just to try on clothes to see which one looks the best.

Picking out what to wear for each day can take time and multiplying that by 4 people or more can take even more time. Packing clothes in outfits even down to underwear and socks can make all the difference.

Not only does this save time, but it also ensures that your kiddos have outfits that actually match and look good.

Grab a pack of gallon or larger zip lock bags and pack a shirt, pants, underwear, socks and accessories in one of those bags then label it for each day. You also can fold them in your suitcase with the socks and underwear in between the shirt and pants.

Try on your clothes before you pack them to ensure that it fits. It really sucks when you have a dress or pants that you really love only to get to Disney world and realize it doesn’t fit right.

Waiting until the very last minute to pack

It’s a day or two before your Disney World trip and you start scrambling, grabbing any clothes that you can find and throwing them in your suitcase. Only to make it to your destination, then you forget that shirt that would have gone perfect with those pants, or your deodorant, or your favorite shampoo.

Start packing weeks, even a month ahead of time! You can start with your travel toiletries, medicines and accessories. Then do your clothes last, this way you can take your time, get organized and not have to rush at the last minute.

Not using a packing list

I have to admit, I never used to use a packing list when preparing to go on a vacation. Doing this would result in not only forgetting items that I needed, but it I would also bring things that were not necessary for my trip.

This list does not have to be fancy, you can simply download a helpful Disney World packing list like this one or you can grab a piece of paper and start writing down items that you know you will need.

Bringing too much stuff

packing mistakes for trip to disney world

I think we all have made this packing mistake before.

Packing too much crap , yes I said crap, things that you don’t need. Your Disney trip is for 1 week but you packed for a month-long trip or you brought your hair dryer when you can use the one at the hotel or air dry your hair.

Pack only what you need for the days that you will be on vacation. You do not want to be that person that is holding up the line at check-in at the airport and has to take things out of your suitcase because you went over the weight limit for checked bags.

Preparing for the weather

Okay this is a big one, If you have ever been to Orlando, FL then you know that the weather is unpredictable. It can be hot and humid, then pouring down raining to the point when you can’t even see on the road.

It was a nice summer day and I was wearing a dress, with my hair down and we were headed to Rainforest cafe in Disney Springs and as soon as we got there, it started pouring down rain.

I was soaked!

Then the rain just stopped, like nothing ever happened.

The next day when we went to Disney World parks, we bought ponchos and no rain, nothing!

It is always a good idea to check the weather and bring clothes that you will be comfortable in if the weather suddenly changes.

For Disney World bring small ponchos, wear hiking sandals, and maybe add a thin change of clothes in your park bag.

Not packing water bottles

Summertime at Disney World is hot and one mistake that can ruin your trip is not packing water bottles.

You will be in long lines and having a water bottle right in your backpack will make things so much easier.

Reusable water bottles are best, but even the plastic water bottles can literally save you. This also helps you stay hydrated as you will be walking thousands of steps while you are at the parks.

Bringing your own water bottle can save you money and time. You can even pack a couple of juice boxes and sports hydration drinks.

Not saving space in your suitcase or bringing an extra bag for souvenirs

You’re at the Disney shops and see the cutest mug, oh that shirt is cute too, let’s get the kids the Disney light up bubble maker.

You head back to your hotel, getting ready to pack your bags to go back home and think how the hell am I going to fit this in my bag. Then you have to go out and buy a bag just to take souvenirs home.

Sound familiar?

I have totally done this in the past, luckily my husband thought about it and we ended up putting everything we bought in his suitcase.

One way to avoid this is to leave space in your suitcase or bring an extra small duffle bag that you can use as a carry-on.

Not bringing activities for your kiddos

“I’m Bored”, we have all heard those words before and when kids are bored they can start to do things that we don’t want them to.

We all know kids’ attention spans can be very short, whether you are standing in line or at the hotel. Bringing activities and games are a great way to keep them entertained.

If they love to read you can bring a small book, even a fidget toy or pocket etch and sketch would be a great thing to have on hand while waiting in line. I have even seen people with bubbles for their kiddos to play with in line.

Not doing Carry on bags

Checking your bag and not doing carry-on bags can literally ruin your Disney World trip!

Imagine this: you check your luggage and it gets lost or delayed and you have nothing, no clothes, no toiletries. It can take days to weeks to recover lost luggage. In this case having a carry on bag can literally change everything.

Every time we fly, we always take carry-on bags, especially since the prices of checked bags are rising.

Save yourself a headache and pick up a small carry-on suitcase and add a backpack that you can hook right on your suitcase handle  or a small duffle bag and you are good to go.

Neglecting to bring first aid and medicine

This is one of many packing mistakes that we often forget especially if you don’t need these things often. However, it is always a good idea to be prepared.

I was at the mall once and a woman was walking around looking for a band aid because her child cut his finger. Then she became angry because the security guard did not have a band aid.

After that I started keeping band aid in my bag, JUST IN CASE!

Another example is what if you get a massive headache which could ruin your day at Disney World park. When all you needed was a travel size Advil packet that could make it all better.

It’s a great idea to pack a small pouch or makeup bag with all of your travel sized medicines and first aid.

It’s better to be prepared than regretting not bringing it.
